About Vermont Soapstone   (802)263-5404

Back in 1850, a Vermonter by the name of J.M. Billings was said to have unearthed a sizable chunk of soapstone while tilling his field on the side of Hawks Mountain. According to Perkinsville history, this little by-chance incident marked the debut of soapstone. In Vermont, at least.

Not long after J.M.’s discovery, some industrious Vermonters began mining and milling this unusually smooth gray stone from local quarries they owned. That was the genesis of our company, Vermont Soapstone. Back then, the stone was mainly used to make bed warmers, boot dryers, heat registers, griddles and wood burning stoves. Soapstone has this wonderful quality of absorbing heat fast, but releasing it really slow. So, on a three-dog winter night in Vermont, mom would keep the beds warm with a small hot slab of it. Very handy.

Soapstone is our one and only business. We’re America’s original miners, importers and fabricators of soapstone. We are between active quarries in Vermont, having closed our Chester quarry, and the Newfane quarry is in permitting. For now, we import slabs from our trusted suppliers in Brazil.

Over the years, we’ve created many useful soapstone items for American homes. Soapstone sinks, counter tops and fireplaces. Steps, floors, shower stalls and more. For use in most every room. Fortunately for us, soapstone has gained popularity among those who are drawn to its classic look, its integrity, the unique character of each piece and, of course, the smoothness you feel when you rub it. It’s almost therapeutic.

Sure, other companies offer soapstone. But we believe that being America’s original soapstone company…and working with it for a century and a half…gives us, and you, a leg up. It makes us confident that you’ll be much more than satisfied with your Vermont Soapstone piece.
